A mist eliminator (also called demister or entrainment separator) is a device installed in process vessels, towers, and ducts to remove liquid droplets and aerosols from gas streams. Mist eliminators prevent product loss, protect downstream equipment (compressors, catalysts, heat exchangers), ensure environmental compliance, and improve product purity. Without effective mist elimination, entrained liquid can cause corrosion, fouling, catalyst poisoning, and regulatory violations.
Which type of mist eliminator should I choose?
For general liquid droplet removal at moderate gas velocities, a wire mesh demister pad provides the best cost-performance balance. For high gas velocity or high liquid loading applications, a vane type mist eliminator is required to prevent flooding. For sub-micron acid mist, chemical aerosol, or fine oil fog where emission limits are stringent (<5 mg/Nm³), a candle mist eliminator (fiber bed) is the only effective technology. Many installations use a combination — e.g., wire mesh for primary separation followed by candle elements for sub-micron polishing.
