Chlor-Alkali & Chemical Industry Mist Challenges

The chlor-alkali industry produces chlorine (Cl&sub2;), caustic soda (NaOH), and hydrogen (H&sub2;) through electrolysis of brine (NaCl solution). These processes generate highly corrosive mists containing hydrochloric acid (HCl), chlorine, sodium hydroxide, and sulfuric acid aerosols that demand specialized mist elimination technology. Downstream chemical manufacturing — including PVC, chlorinated solvents, hydrochloric acid, sodium hypochlorite, and specialty chemicals — creates additional mist elimination challenges across hundreds of process units.

Chlorine Gas Drying Towers

Wet chlorine from electrolysis cells is dried using concentrated H&sub2;SO&sub4; in packed tower systems. The overhead gas carries entrained sulfuric acid mist that must be removed before downstream chlorine compression and liquefaction. Sub-micron H&sub2;SO&sub4; aerosol (<1 µm) requires fiber bed filtration to achieve <1 ppm acid carryover.

HCl Absorption & Synthesis

HCl gas absorption columns, HCl synthesis units (burner/absorber), and muriatic acid production generate fine hydrochloric acid mist. Demisting the absorber off-gas prevents HCl emission and recovers valuable product. PVDF or PTFE-coated wire mesh and candle filters provide the required corrosion resistance.

Caustic Soda Evaporators

Multi-effect evaporator systems concentrate NaOH from 10–12% (cell liquor) to 50% (commercial grade) or 70% (anhydrous). Steam from evaporators carries entrained NaOH droplets that contaminate condensate, causing boiler feed water quality problems and product loss.

Recommended: Wire Mesh Demister (Nickel 200 / SS 316L)

Brine Electrolysis & Cell Room Ventilation

Membrane and diaphragm cell electrolysis of brine produces wet chlorine, hydrogen, and caustic soda. Cell gas streams carry NaCl brine mist and NaOH droplets. Cell room ventilation systems must capture chlorine and caustic aerosols to protect workers and meet occupational exposure limits.

Sodium Hypochlorite (Bleach) Production

Chlorine absorption in caustic soda to produce NaOCl generates entrained mist from the absorption tower. Vent gas from bleach production must be demisted to prevent chlorine emission and product loss.

Specialty Chemical & Pharmaceutical

Reactor vents, distillation columns, solvent recovery systems, and scrubber off-gas in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing. Applications range from organic acid mist to inorganic chemical aerosol, requiring material selection specific to each process chemistry.
