ECOGRACE
Power Plant Mist Elimination Challenges
Wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) is the dominant SO&sub2; removal technology for coal-fired and oil-fired power plants worldwide. While highly effective at removing SO&sub2;, wet scrubbers create a new challenge: entrained slurry droplets and sulfuric acid aerosol in the cleaned flue gas. Without effective mist elimination, these droplets cause downstream duct corrosion, stack liner degradation, and visible “blue plume” emissions from sub-micron H&sub2;SO&sub4; aerosol.
ECOGRACE supplies multi-stage mist elimination systems for WFGD applications: vane type mist eliminators or wire mesh demisters for primary bulk slurry removal, and candle mist eliminators for SO&sub3; aerosol polishing to eliminate blue plume and meet the most stringent particulate emission limits.
Power Plant Applications
Wet FGD Scrubber — Primary Demisters
First-stage mist elimination installed above the spray zone in the FGD absorber tower. Removes bulk limestone/gypsum slurry droplets (>10 µm) from the cleaned flue gas. Must handle high gas velocity (3–5 m/s), high liquid loading, and resist abrasion from slurry particles.
Recommended: Vane Pack (PP) or Wire Mesh (PP) with wash water system
SO&sub3; / Blue Plume Polishing
Sub-micron H&sub2;SO&sub4; aerosol (<1 µm) formed from SO&sub3; reacting with moisture passes through primary demisters and creates visible blue/white stack plume. Fiber bed candle filters installed downstream provide ≥99% SO&sub3; removal, reducing aerosol emission to <2 mg/Nm³.
Recommended: Candle Mist Eliminator (Glass fiber)
Steam Drum Demisters
Boiler steam drum demisters prevent silica, salt, and boiler water carryover to superheater and turbine. Contaminated steam causes turbine blade deposits, efficiency loss, and catastrophic failure. SS 316L wire mesh demisters operating at saturated steam conditions.
Recommended: Wire Mesh Demister (SS 316L, high-density)
Cooling Tower Drift Elimination
Cooling tower drift eliminators prevent water droplet carryover from natural draft and mechanical draft cooling towers. Reducing drift loss improves water efficiency, prevents Legionella transmission, and minimizes ice formation and mineral deposition on surrounding structures.
Recommended: Vane Type Eliminator (PP or FRP)
Multi-Stage FGD Mist Elimination System
For the most demanding emission requirements, ECOGRACE recommends a multi-stage mist elimination approach for wet FGD systems:
Recommended Products
Vane Type Mist Eliminator
FGD primary demister and cooling tower drift eliminator. PP vane packs for acid resistance.
Wire Mesh Demister Pad
